March Must-Listens: The Shotgun Seat Team Picks

Check out our team’s March favorites, including Lauren Alaina, Chris Bandi, Luke Bryan, Brett Young, and Drake White.

Christina: “Three” by Lauren Alaina

If I had to choose one word to sum up Lauren Alaina’s sophomore album released last month it would be, honest.   Alaina having a hand in writing each of the twelve songs has allowed for her story to be told on her terms.  “Three” a standout on the LP was co-written with Seth Ennis and Jordan Reynolds.  Alaina sings about the past six years, traveling and working hard to make her dream of being a country artist a reality but bringing to light the sacrifices they have to make. Inspiring and relatable, “Three” is for anyone who has ever had to fight hard to achieve a goal and the rewarding gratification you feel when you finally reach it.

Key Lyrics: “Six years of missing home for three minutes on the radio.”

Lydia: “Story” by Drake White

Drake White’s “Story” off his Spark LP was the perfect answer to a recent search through my music library for something fun and upbeat. The uptempo, foot-stomping, hand-clapping “Story,” written by White, Mark Irwin and Tommy Lee James, is the quintessential definition of country music storytelling. Its rootsy sound is filled with heavy fiddle and banjo that exudes dance-inducing energy right out of the gate. Inspired by the many people White has met while out on the road, the track’s title speaks for its content: their stories put to music. Check out Drake White’s acoustic version below.

Key lyrics: “Some got a little, some got a lot / Some of us are lost, some of us are not / But everybody got their moment in glory / ‘Cause everybody got their story.”

Natalie: “Makin’ Me Say” by Brett Young

I literally cannot. stop. playing. this track off of Young’s debut self-titled LP. It’s hooky and bouncy, from the first hand clap of the intro to the last “mm-mmm’s” of the chorus. The lyrics aren’t life-changing, but Young’s knack for catchy syncopation and danceable rhythms make it an ideal drivers-seat jam.

Also: “Cadillac-red lipstick slow-rolling on your lips.” #LipstickGoals

Annie: “Gone Girl” by Chris Bandi

We’re heading into windows-down, music-up weather, and there’s nothing better to jam to than the latest from Chris Bandi, “Gone Girl.” Smooth vocals and a strong groove centerpiece this song, which will hit solidly for fans of artists ranging from Brett Eldredge to Maroon 5.

Markus: “Fast” by Luke Bryan

Arguably the best single of the year to-date, “Fast” is a stunningly reflective piece of music that ranks highly among Luke Bryan’s largely hit-or-miss discography. It serves as a reminder to savor every moment, and that even the seemingly smallest things are aspects to be appreciated. The gentle pop-country acoustics and Bryan’s melancholic vocal adds to the effect, while the melody is among the strongest on the radio today. It’s a home run, and an example of what should be expected out of Bryan as an A-list star.
