Final Thoughts

– I love Miranda, don’t get me wrong, but she has to be the most overrated artist in all of music when it comes to these award shows. Not even her husband gets this kind of treatment. Platinum is a good album, even a very good album, but 12 Stories, The Outsiders, and Riser are all FAR superior records. My opinion aside, The Outsiders has outsold Platinum, and 12 Stories has out-acclaimed it. To make matters worse, it seems likely that Miranda will complete the sweep, and take home Album of the Year at the ACM’s as well (likely in addition to Song, Single, Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year awards.) *sigh*.

– Glen Campbell is well represented here, (deservedly) taking home the Best Country Song award, and a The Band Perry’s cover of his song taking home Best Country Duo/Group Performance award. Nice to see.

– How the hell did Sturgill Simpson’s Metamodern Sounds In Country Music not win Americana Album of the Year? I’m not going to pretend I’m well versed in the depths of Americana, but that is just bizarre.

– Carrie Underwood Grammy love continues, and it’s deserved, just as her win with “Blown Away” was well deserved.

– Yay for Old Crow Medicine Show love!

– Brandy Clark may not have won anything, but her nominations for New Artist of the Year and Country Album of the Year are proof enough that Clark is on the rise within the music industry. Despite a lack of commercial success, it’s not a stretch to call her one of Country’s upper-tier female performers.

– Speaking of Brandy Clark, her performance of “Hold My Hand” with Dwight Yoakam was flawless. Just gorgeous.

– Miranda’s “Little Red Wagon” performance wasn’t too bad from a technical standpoint, but I just can’t get past the awfulness of the song.

– Eric Church gave a strong performance of “Give Me Back My Hometown”. Nice to see a stripped back performance from Church.

– Overall, the representation of the genre was pretty solid, despite it’s limited appearances. Would I have liked more country over the course of the night? Sure, seeing as it is climbing the ladder of popular genres, but it certainly wasn’t a bad night for our beloved genre of music.
