New EP: Canaan Smith

Canaan Smith released his debut, self-titled EP this week via Mercury Records. The EP follows on the immense success of Smith’s feel-good single “Love You Like That,” which transitioned well from Sirius XM to terrestrial radio and continues to climb the charts, with over 200,000 copies sold.

Smith keeps to the vibe of “Love You Like That” on the EP, produced by Brett Beavers and Jimmy Robbins, with some interesting deviations. After leading off with the single, Smith settles into “Two Lane Road,” a radio-friendly offering that boasts a summery pop hook and a rap bridge – think Aldean on “Dirt Road Anthem.” It could be painful, but like Aldean, Smith manages to make it feel natural, for a song that will do well on the festival circuit. “Mad Love” has mid-tempo Florida Georgia Line vibes, while “Hole in A Bottle” and “Stuck” lean on the lyrical, more side.

While it’s all in all not a particularly ground-breaking offering, Smith’s EP has a feel-good vibe that’s just plain fun, and with spring and summer right around the corner, will do well at radio.

“I moved to Nashville 10 years ago, and I’ve been working hard just to get music out there and music I’m proud of and music that I feel like represents who I am as an artist,” Smith says. “I think with this EP coming out, five songs is a pretty good starting point for where we’re heading, and I’m just thankful for the opportunity to get to share it with the fans.”
