Watch: Ryan Hurd Holds Nothing Back in New Video

Ryan Hurd holds nothing back in his new video for “Hold You Back.”

The black-and-white video features Hurd, alone in his apartment after saying a final goodbye to his love who’s moved to a new city beginning a new chapter in her life. Both the song and video portray coming to terms with the end of an on-and-off relationship. The couple continually find themselves in a cycle of getting drunk and winding up together for a night, and neither is moving forward.

Hurd sings: “I got drunk, you got drunk / We had sex, we woke up / Caught up in a thread count, tangled in skin / Now you’re checking your phone, he’s checking in / And it’s right now that I start to see it, all of the weight of the way that it is / Caught between what it means to start over, and what happens over and over again.”

While the lyrics and video to “Hold You Back” (co-written by Hurd, Nicolle Galyon and Will Weatherly) tell a slightly different story, Hurd explained to CMT: “The narrative of the song is a little bit different than the narrative of the video, but I’m really proud of the way they both turned out. I think chorus-wise, the video fits both storylines. I love that it’s a story that you usually don’t hear from a guy in country music. She’s moved on and he must now as well. The story is told from the male point of view in a loving, caring way. While he loves her, he does the right thing in the end, which is to set her free.”

Key Lyrics: “You had your heart in a cage, I cut it loose, baby fly away / I’m holding on to what we had, but I don’t wanna hold you, I don’t wanna hold you back.”
