Old Dominion’s leadoff single from their EP, “Shut Me Up,” has us wanting them to do anything but shut up.  The song cleverly fuses together two themes common to the country genre–thinking non-stop about a love-interest, and wanting a kiss–which creates a unique take on what otherwise would be a well-covered story.

The fusion of topics is complemented by creatively blending together elements from a variety of genres into the tune.  The song kicks off with a bold percussive punch backed by the steady presence of the electric guitar, giving the song a rock-feel.  From the opening lyric, though, Matthew Ramsey’s voice has a decidedly country tone.  As the song progresses, Ramsey’s quick, rhythmic, and smooth delivery of the line “I’m either talking about you or thinking about you or running my mouth about being without you with all of my friends” sprinkles a hint of a hip-hop vibe into the tune.  In the band’s introduction video on their website, Ramsey describes the band’s sound as “everything we ever listened to as a kid, all put together,” and that description holds perfectly true of of “Shut Me Up.”

Old Dominion’s EP, is set for release on October 7th, and contains five other songs in addition to “Shut Me Up.”  If history is any indication, both the single and EP will do quite well.  The group’s members have previously co-written chart toppers, such as The Band Perry’s “Chainsaw,” and Craig Morgan’s “Wake Up Lovin’ You.”  The EP was produced by one of our absolute favorites: Shane McAnally, who has contributed to a long list of hits including of Kacey Musgraves’ Grammy-winning album “Same Trailer Different Park.”
