Two Story Road at the Bluebird Cafe

Last Sunday was rainy but the soft glow of the Christmas lights at the Bluebird Cafe provided a living-room style warmth as Jamie and Brandon from Two Story Road hit the stage.  The husband and wife duo has been making quite a name for themselves in Nashville over the past few years.  Jamie toured as Carrie Underwood’s backup singer, while Brandon played in both Gretchen Wilson and Danny Gokey’s bands.  Although their experience certainly provides context for the level of talent they bring to the table, the duo’s performance at the Bluebird made it exceptionally clear that they’ve successfully transitioned from background to center stage roles.  The evening marked Two Story Road’s second performance at the Bluebird, and they commanded the stage with grace and the comfort of seasoned veterans.

The duo has a knack for storytelling–both in their songs and in their on stage banter.  They kicked off the show with, “It Might Be You,” an upbeat song about meeting that special someone who just might be a perfect romantic match.  At the beginning the song Jamie sings, I”m going to find me a boy out there/who’ll hold my head and hold my hair/ when i’ve had too much tequila/I’m just sayin’. After they finished the song, Brandon made a little disclaimer that he never actually has had to hold Jamie’s hair back due to a tequila incident. While Jamie was in the clear, Brandon later confessed that he almost burned the house down making dinner one evening when Jamie was on the road.  He did completely clean up the mess, though, and the accident inspired a sweet song called “Better When You’re Home.”

As the night progressed, Two Story Road impressed with a diverse set of songs that showcased the band’s depth.  They completely captivated the Bluebird with “Lifted,” a beautiful ballad about how the little things in life often are enough to make a positive impact on someone’s day.  They even threw a Garth Brooks cover into the setlist, performing “Wrapped Up In You.”

The geographical diversity of the audience was a match for the duo’s musical versatility.  At one point, they asked everyone in the crowd where they were from, and received a range of responses.  People from all over–including Wales, Seattle, Ohio, Kentucky, and California–were huddled around the little Bluebird stage.  After the show, we caught up with Jamie and Brandon, and they said that singing for, and meeting, all of the wonderful audience members was definitely a highlight of their evening.

While the well-traveled audience’ was a highlight for the band, perhaps the most exciting moment of the evening for everyone else  was the duo’s announcement that they are planning to release their “debut project” sometime in Spring 2015. Mark Bright, who has produced Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, and Sara Evans (to name a few) is producing the project, so it’ll be a talent-packed release.  The duo made a fun video earlier this week to provide more information on the announcement.

Spring 2015 may feel far away (especially given the wintery weather sweeping the nation), but in the meantime, check out some of the demo that Two Story Road has available on their website.
