Writing of the Song: Montgomery Gentry’s “In A Small Town”

Montgomery Gentry’s “In A Small Town,” from their latest album Folks Like Us, is an ode to hometowns, and one Eddie Montgomery associates closely with his home of Danville, KY. “That song kind of reminds me of it, talking about if you wanna leave it makes you come back,” Montgomery told us recently. Written by Mike Busbee, Brett James, and Justin Weaver, the song draws on their own small town experiences. Justin Weaver shares with us how the song came together:
“In A Small Town” is really a story that’s close to where my wife and I come from,” Weaver says. “I grew up playing in a band with Jason Aldean there in Forsyth, GA and my wife and I got married and left Forsyth in July. So it’s funny that the first verse is about the band Jason and I grew up playing in and the second verse mentions July where we got married. It’s totally true that after moving to and spending over 10 years in Nashville we realized how much that small town really shaped us and how much my wife, Heather, and I love to go back there. It just feels like home going back and it will always be a part of who we are. It’s awesome to spread your wings and move away from a small town like Forsyth, but there’s a lot of comfort going back to those roots and we will always feel that way about where we came from.”
“Going back and listening to this song reminds me so much of my home town,” he adds. “I write songs and rarely come back to them. This is really close to my heart.”
