Josh Abbott Band Live in Nashville

Josh Abbott Band brought Texas country to Nashville the other night at Exit/In. Eager to see their home state heroes, many members of the crowd proudly sported the Lone Star State’s colors, maps and flags. Though it wasn’t typical Music City attire, the Texas pride was a perfect match for the band’s live show, which still maintains the college feel that fans fell in love with during their early days in Lubbock.  True to their song, “Small Town Saturday Night”, the entire show felt like an intimate weekend hang out at the local dive bar.

Abbott set the casual atmosphere with his conversational banter early in the show, saying to the audience “we’re gonna play some old shit and some new shit.” Before playing “Tuesday Night,” a song about kicking back and eating beer and tacos with friends, he asked the room “how many of you wish you were back in college?!” eliciting a great roar from the crowd.

Boot stomping and hand clapping died down a bit as the band performed their new single “Amnesia,” a darker song, off of their upcoming album, Front Row Seat. The track provided a nice contrast to the group’s traditional upbeat flare. The introspective mood continued as Abbott invited 23 year old Nashville singer-songwriter Carly Pearce onstage to give the crowd a preview of “Wasn’t That Drunk,” a duet off off the November release. Pearce’s smooth vocals combined with Abbott’s rougher twang on the duet, which has an emotional tension similar to Blake Shelton’s duet with Ashley Monroe on “Lonely Tonight.”

The new tunes added a new dimension to their onstage vibe without losing sight of the kick-back feel that fans have been drawn to since the band’s college days in Texas, making for a well-rounded show.
