Shotgun Seat Song of the Day: Charlie Worsham’s “How I Learned To Pray”

Charlie Worsham’s entire debut album Rubberband is killer, and our Shotgun Seat Song of the Day “How I Learned To Pray” is an absolute standout. The song starts with an image of a car wreck, with soberingly poignant lyrics:

“When I was sixteen, that set of keys was a pair of wings / Daddy, pretty please, can I take her out tonight? / I swear I won’t get her over fifty-five / With ‘Back in Black’ racing through my veins / Last thing I thought was if flipping this thing don’t get me killed / I’m pretty sure my old man will / And seeing his face when the wrecker hauled my freedom away / That’s how I learned to pray.”

A co-write with Jeremy Spillman and Ryan Tyndell, describes how prayer isn’t necessarily learned in church, it’s learned through those moments when you need it most.

Worsham recently spoke at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, and played the song along with detailing what went into the writing of the tune.
