BMI and Warner Chappell Bring LA and Nashville Songwriters Together for Writers Retreat

MusicRow reports that this past January, BMI and Warner Chappell brought a group of songwriters based in Los Angeles to Nashville to write with some of Nashville’s strongest writers for a five day writers’ retreat.

Writers at the retreat included Danielle Bradbery, Ross Copperman, Dan+Shay, Michael Dulaney, Jesse Frasure, Nicolle Galyon, Haley Georgia, Marv Green, Ross Golan, Hunter Hayes, David Hodges, Breyan Isaac, Nolan Lambroza, Ammar Malik, Bonnie McKee, Wendell Mobley, Maren Morris, Cam Ochs, Eric Paslay, The Band Perry, Bear Rinehart, Bo Rinehart, Dave Thomson, Laura Veltz, Tony Martin, Maggie Chapman, and Jordan Reynolds.

As country becomes increasingly pop-influenced at radio, will co-writes like these yield another style or sub-genre? Keith Urban’s Fuse might be a good example of the collaborative potential, with songs like “Little Bit of Everything,” a co-write between Kevin Rudolf and The Warren Brothers.

On the other side of things, artists like Train have been known to cut songs written by country writers, with Tom Douglas and Matraca Berg among the writers on the liner notes of their last album, Bulletproof Picasso. Cam Ochs, who as an artist just hit radio as Cam with her single “My Mistake,” co-wrote a song on Miley Cyrus’ latest, Bangerz.

Either way, we’re anxiously looking forward to hearing the sonic outcomes of the retreat, and seeing where the songs might land.
