If you thought Nelly’s involvement with country music began and ended with his Tim McGraw collab “Over and Over” and helping Florida Georgia Line “Cruise” to an 8X Platinum certification, you’d be mistaken. The rapper released last week his cover of Thomas Rhett’s multi-week #1 “Die A Happy Man,” adding his signature sound, replete with a few yeah‘s and shorty‘s, to the track. The instrumental is re-produced, giving the song a distinct genre shift and providing additional fodder for the current what-defines-a-country-song conversation. Nelly has been writing with country artists such as Florida Georgia Line, and is reportedly working on an EP, Heartland, that leans toward the genre.
