Hidden Gem: Parmalee’s “Another Day Gone”

Parmalee has just recently broken onto the scene with hits such as “Carolina” and “Close Your Eyes”, and while connecting well with radio, haven’t appeared to have caught the eyes of many critics. That could change if reviewers and bloggers were to take a deeper look and take a listen to their album cut “Another Day Gone” off their debut project Feels Like Carolina.

From a sonic standpoint, “Another Day Gone” borrows influences from the same pallet as many of their other recordings, taking on a rock-edged sound with a big, hook filled chorus. It’s a sound that fits them well, they sound comfortable singing in that environment (which would make sense, considering they were a rock band before making the shift to country.) In addition to the pleasing country-rock arrangement, lead vocalist, Matt Thomas, sings the lyric with conviction and persuasion to hook the listener in.

Oh, and about the lyric, it’s quite magnificent. The storyline is centered around a narrator who screwed up a relationship, and now wants to try and correct it. He laments mistakes such as missing his loved one singing at church, and is now trying his hardest to correct his errors before time runs out, or he wakes up “with another day gone”. It’s a poignant, relatable lyric that’s detailed and thoughtful.

“Another Day Gone” is a masterpiece that showcases boatloads of potential for the rising band. It’s a mature, borderline philosophical effort. If country music’s veteran heavyweights could execute a song of this caliber, with this much potency, the music we could have would be unbelievable.
