Kacey Musgraves debuted today her video for “Are You Sure,” a cover of the Willie Nelson song on which Nelson himself makes an appearance.
At the listening party for the release of Pageant Material, Musgraves shared that the song was one she’d loved for years, and one she’d asked Nelson about on his tour bus, wondering why he didn’t play it anymore. She noted that he was surprised she knew it, and that he pulled out a guitar and started to play. From that conversation stemmed Musgraves’ recording of the song as a duet with Nelson.
The video fits the song well, featuring the singers in a bar and with a band, to a backdrop of Musgraves’ signature Pageant Material tinsel. The song, which is a classic country sound paired with unsettlingly honest lyrics, appeared as a bonus track on Pageant Material, a gem that Musgraves saved as a surprise prior to release. “Oh, look around you / Look down the bar from you / The lonely faces that you see / Are you sure that this is where you want to be / These are your friends / But are they real friends / Do they love you the same as me / Are you sure that this is where you want to be,” the song begins. Both Musgraves and Nelson are flawless in their delivery, for an incredible performance.
