Review: Blackjack Billy’s “Night Light” Is Their Best Single to-Date

I’ve been one of Blackjack Billy’s biggest critics. Most of their music found a sweet-spot between overly obnoxious and indescribably stupid, making any talent they had fall to the wayside and planting themselves almost permanently in low expectations. So yeah, I wasn’t expecting a ton out of “Night Light”, and what did I get? Well, actually, a very solid pop-country effort.

The most striking difference between “Night Light” and the rest of their discography is the production, which, while not spectacular, isn’t overwhelmingly loud, nor decidedly genre transcending. It gives room for the vocal to breathe, something that works to their advantage incredibly, as lead-signer Noll Billings can hold his own vocally.

The record is also a big change of pace lyrically, focusing on a tender relationship using the “night light” metaphor. It comes off as sincere and heartfelt, even if not particularly original. Melodically, the single is also a big winner, humming along at a pleasant pace that is built for repeat listens. The songwriting is shockingly strong, and is an indicator that they can indeed craft something worth listening to from a lyrical standpoint.

All in all, “Night Light” is a well-executed record and a strong overall package that doesn’t absolutely excel in any one area, but also completely avoids falling on it’s face. Hopefully this a sign of things to come for Blackjack Billy, and if they keep recording songs like this, they may just win me over one day. Good stuff.
