Review: Chris Young Releases Tremendous “I’m Comin’ Over” to Radio

Coming off an album in that spawned three top five hits (“Aw Naw”, “Who I Am With You”, “Lonely Eyes”), Chris Young is back with one of his finest radio singles to date, a lead single titled “I’m Comin’ Over”, and proving that A.M. was just an unfortunate phase, not what we should expect from Young going forward.

Written by Young with Josh Hoge and Corey Crowder, “I’m Comin’ Over” talks about a relationship that is clearly ready to end, but doesn’t due to the persistence of the narrator’s ex to keep him around, and the man’s inability to stay away from what he knows is a relationship that should already technically be finished. Considering most of the last Young-era was full of songs that fit right in between past and current efforts from the likes of Chase Rice and Cole Swindell, the lyrical shift is a very pleasant and much needed surprise.

As good as the lyrics may be however, it’s Young and his producer that do the heavy lifting here. Young has always been one of the genre’s absolute best vocalists, and he shows why here, absolutely tearing into the lyric, and even testing his range once the bridge rolls around. Likewise, the production finds the perfect balance between modern and traditionally tinged, keeping it safe enough for radio and iTunes, while also keeping it grounded enough in the roots in the genre that it’s not likely to piss off many traditionalists. The melody fits the melancholy tone of the song perfectly, and holds the song together as a tightly-knit package. Sonically, “I’m Comin’ Over” hits all the right marks, making it suited for repeated listens.

All in all, “I’m Comin’ Over” is as good as mainstream country gets. It’s cohesive, it’s accessible, it’s intelligent, and of course, it’s well sung. Welcome back Chris. We missed you.
