Thomas Rhett released “Crash & Burn,” the first song off of his upcoming album today. The soulful upbeat track is a definite departure from his previous material, heavily drawing on suave R&B rhythms.  In preparing for his latest release, Rhett closely studied Bruno Mars’ music and showmanship, classifying the new album’s sound as “Country Bruno.”

“Crash and Burn,” penned by songwriting maven, Chris Stapleton along with Jesse Frasure, dynamically combines a feel-good vibe with a melancholy story.  Rhett sings, “Do you hear that, it’s where I’m at, it’s the sound of teardrops fallin’ down.” The lyrics, without the context of the melody, read like an emotive power ballad.  Inwardly, the guy in the song is clearly tormented by the break up.  Meanwhile, he’s outwardly strolling down the street with swag and a smile, as communicated by the track’s uptempo, funky feel.

Though channeling Bruno Mars has taken Rhett’s music on a different route, fans of his old material will find solace in knowing that he has found a vocal sweet spot on “Crash and Burn.” He croons on the track with buttery-smooth vocals, while maintaining the country twang that listeners fell in love with on his previous singles.

It’s clearly early in the game, but Rhett’s, who recently just celebrated “Make Me Wanna” going number one, is likely to have another hit on his hands with “Crash and Burn.”
