Wednesday evening The Shotgun Seat hosted a songwriter round benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee at 3rd and Lindsley. The night featured an hour and a half of incredible music from Lockhart, CJ Solar, Benjy Davis and Thomas Finchum. Each of the songwriters brought a unique vibe to the evening, singing songs they themselves recorded or had other artists cut.
Johnny Bulford and Janell Wheeler who make up the duo Lockhart entertained the audience with their stellar harmonies with songs off of their EP, including a love song “On My Way to You.” Bulford, who was a co writer on the Chris Young top five hit “Lonely Eyes,” sang a Lockhart version of the song.
CJ Solar kicked off with his title track to his debut EP Hard One to Turn Down. Showcasing his rock side even in an acoustic setting, Solar also played his current single “Tall Boy.” The Louisiana native closed his set with his Jerrod Niemann single, “Blue Bandana.”
Benjy Davis is a frequent co writer of Kree Harrison, who was slated to play the event but couldn’t due to unforeseen circumstances. Davis featured one of the songs that they wrote together off of her debut album This Old Thing, released to iTunes and Spotify today. Also singing “I Know A Guy,” a co-write off of Chris Young’s latest album, Davis’ smooth vocals added a new twist to the cut.
Thomas Finchum impressed the audience with his touching ballads reflecting on love, loss, and nostalgia. Singing “Taking Home The Flowers,” a haunting tale set at a funeral, the crowd was hushed, listening to Finchum’s beautiful voice.
